Over 50 years ago, I played with my first dollhouse, it was a yellow two story dollhouse with a green roof; I did not know the significance that dollhouse would hold...
Fast forward 14 years later- After walking down the long hallway, being patted down, emptying my pockets and moving through security, I was unaware that this visit was not a normal outing for teenagers on the weekends. As a teenager I would visit maximum security prisons regularly.
Years later while in Botetourt County I received a phone call that my 11-year-old cousin was missing and no other details were given.
This tragedy divided my family in half, sending one brother to prison for life and the other brother whose precious daughter was tragically taken and murdered.
Compass For Life has been formed to house those individuals who have made mistakes in life and have nowhere to turn and to find a positive direction in life.
The experience of visiting a maximum-security prison provided insight into the human-side of these individuals who had been convicted of serious and violent offenses. I was able to see families embracing and interacting with their loved ones in caring and affectionate ways. These emotional connections highlighted to me that despite the severity of the inmates crime, families may still view them with a lens of love, compassion, and humanity.
We have been blessed to see the vision God has put before us, to give those second chances. It doesn't matter where you have been, only the direction you plan on going.
By the way, Compass For Life home is yellow, two-story, and has green roof!
